Whether you're a Fortune 500 CEO or busy stay-at-home mom, the secret to being more effective and living a happier, healthier life is to hurry up and slow down, or unplug. As Anne Lamott said, "Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you." Contrary to what every type-A person thinks, studies show that you can actually be more effective by doing less, by unplugging from the chaos of your life for just minutes a day. This can be done effortlessly - even while waiting on line at Starbucks - through meditation.
But Unplug is not the book for anyone who loves buddhas and woo-woo talk. It's a revolutionary book by spiritual entrepreneur and founder and CEO of a popular LA-based meditation studio Suze Yalof Schwartz. The first book that shows the overwhelmed and overworked type-A person how and why to unplug in order to recharge.
Experts ranging from Dr. Oz to Harvard scientists to Vogue claim meditation can make us happier, healthier, more effective, and even smarter. And Unplug is the only book that offers a no-nonsense approach that will appeal to anyone, even if - no, especially if - you believe you think too much, you have no time, you can't sit still, or it's just not for you. In it, Suze debunks a lot of the misperceptions about meditation, including the notion that you need to sit still for long periods for it to work. She also shares the incredible benefits you'll experience, the proof and science to back up how meditation works, and tools and techniques to easily incorporate quick-hit meditations into daily life.

I am not a great fan of this book, which I ordered in the audio format. Good thing, because I could fast forward through the onslaught of self promoting, income history and name dropping.BUT, when she gets down to method, etc. as in the last few chapters, it is very good.
Author does narrate and she has a lovely voice. At times she seems like she's choking out a word or two, but has a straightforward vocabulary, a keen sense of humor and is very personable.
Pet peeve - she quotes "average" people by stating their profession and age, which are always in high earning jobs and I don't think one person is over 50. Well of course - who is she going to interact with that can't afford to attend her studio.
If it has been a pamphlet, it would have been great.

Unplug A Simple Guide to Meditation for Busy Skeptics and Modern Soul Seekers (Audible Audio Edition) Suze Yalof Schwartz Debra Goldstein Random House Audio Books Reviews
This book is the perfect intro to meditation, especially if you've been intimidated to start in the past. Schwartz successfully proves WHY meditation is helpful for anyone and everyone and how easy it is to do it. I think her background as a fashion editor doing makeovers on Good Morning America etc. really prepared her to show America how simple it is to start; she's not a spiritual teacher, a monk, a yoga teacher, etc. which is refreshing. I can't wait to visit the unplug studio in LA this week!
I gave this book only 3 stars because it is just purely common sense. I believe this takes the art of meditating and purely relates it into a quick easy fix. I think this takes much away from the art itself.
This book is such a great book for anyone who wants to learn about meditiation or for the person who is trying to add meditation into their lives or talk to others about what meditation is AND every meditation teacher should have this on their shelf. If you are curious about the hows and whys of meditiaton as well as how it’s impacting people, including the author, this is a fabulous book to read! I also recommend the Unplug app - there are all types of meditations from less than 5 minutes to 30 mins or more ranging from subjects such as gratitude, calm and positivity to mindful eating, sound baths and candle gazing. Sessions are taught by top teachers in the meditation world including Davidji, Elisha Goldstein and Suze herself!
I think a lot of people are intimidated by meditation in part because so many books on the subject are needlessly stuffy and esoteric. This is a bummer, because meditation is not really all that difficult once you get used to it -- and it's often a lot of fun! This book, written in accessible prose, goes over all the benefits of meditation, debunks the myths that scare people away from meditation, and provides a quick yet comprehensive overview of the various styles of meditation. In short, it's a great intro to meditation for people who might otherwise be a little turned off by the subject.
Suze writes an excellent, easy-to-digest book all about meditation, that is surprisingly detailed while covering the broad and often misunderstood world of meditation. She provides a thorough overview of what meditation is, where it came from, and most importantly why we should care. Her no-nonsense, laid back, easy to read or listen to style makes the information accessible and easy to understand and incorporate, all the while letting you know that there is no "perfect" way to meditate, and that you can find and create what works for you. She also offers and incredible Unplug App with some of the fabulous, unique instructors and I would recommend her book and her content to anyone interested or even not interested in meditation. My main thought throughout the book was, "why did I wait so long to start this?" If I had met Suze or come across her book or her studio any sooner, I would have been meditating much sooner - but hey, better late then never!
Unplug, A Simple Guide to Meditation for Busy Skeptics and Modern Soul Seekers is a relatable, practical and useful tool that makes meditation easier to understand and practice. It is a wonderful book to that has helped me utilize the practice of meditation in my daily life. It is a great reminder of the benefits that meditation brings into a modern life. Like so many people, I live a busy and active life and this book reminds me that anyone can incorporate a daily meditation practice into their life. It makes the concept of meditation approachable and accessible. Personally, the lack of a Guru figure in the book and in these practices makes Unplug appealing and takes away any stigma associated with meditation. I highly recommend this book as an excellent starting point to a meditation practice. For me, it is also a great reminder of why a daily meditation practice is essential in our modern world.
I thought this was a great book! An easy read with simple instructions for meditation. I like that she broke it down to the very basics and gave you different styles to choose from because every person is different and some of us are not meant to sit still!
I am not a great fan of this book, which I ordered in the audio format. Good thing, because I could fast forward through the onslaught of self promoting, income history and name dropping.
