I recently finished reading Dr. Heinrich's book before visiting a surgeon for an appointment where we were going to be discussing surgery options. The things I learned from the book made it one of the most successful doctor's appointments I have ever had. I actually took some key notes from the book into the appointment with me so I wouldn't forget to ask basic, yet specific questions, like:1) What is my main problem?
2) What do I need to do?
3) Why is it important for me to do this?
Highlighting three additional things I learned from the book:
1) Dr. Heinrich's coaching in the book about being mentally and emotionally present during your doctor's appointment was very helpful. Our health - and sometimes our very lives - are on the line, so even if we are tired, we need to work hard to be present when speaking with our doctors.
2) Rephrasing what the doctor is saying and asking them, "Dr., what I understood you to say was..." or "Dr., if I'm understanding you correctly, you're saying..."
3) At the end of the appointment, ask how you can get in contact with your doctor (via E-mail or phone) if you have follow up questions afterwards. Some doctors have someone who will screen their communication, but at least there is a way after the appointment to give the doctor additional information on symptoms/etc. or ask questions that come to mind later. This also helps the doctor expect follow up communication from their patient, if needed.
Dr. Heinrich's is a great writer and I appreciate his ability to help both doctors and patients communicate effectively.
